Right-hander Edinson Volquez received good news Monday when an examination of his elbow revealed that inflammation is gone.

Volquez, on the disabled list since June 2, was given the clearance to restart his throwing program, starting Friday with a long-toss session.

Volquez had advanced on his throwing rehab program to the point where last week he was scheduled to throw off a mound. An MRI done before he took the mound showed, and it showed inflammation was still in the elbow, so he was held back from throwing.

After he does a period of long-toss sessions and sideline sessions, a third MRI will be taken before he is permitted to throw off a mound.

“I’m starting over, and that’s bad,” Volquez said.

Reds Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

With Alex Gonzalez on the disabled list and out four to five weeks, more play time is being handed to Paul Janish, who was starting his fourth game since June 3 on Friday against the Indians.

On Thursday in Toronto, Janish produced two hits in his third start June 3 and it was his fourth two-hit game. Janish has started only 13 games and has hit safely in nine.

“It’s a tough gig to sit for so long and come in and get hits,” said Janish. “It is easier to stay sharp defensively, but not so easy to do it offensively because you can’t simulate game-like conditions on offense.”

Janish is a defensive wizard with the glove and has a weak bat.

When Gonzalez went down, manager Dusty Baker moved Jerry Hairston Jr.

Reds Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Right-hander Edinson Volquez and the Reds suffered a setback when a second MRI revealed that inflammation remains in his elbow. His plan to throw off a mound was put on hold, but it is doubtful he’ll return before the All-Star break.

Volquez hasn’t pitched since June 1 and was making progress with his throwing program. He was to throw off a mound this week, but the first MRI was cloudy because of swelling in his arm, so the second MRI was taken.

The problem is where the forearm muscle meets the bone, and there is no ligament damage. However, trainer Mark Mann said that with the length of time Volquez has been off the mound, by the time he gets through side sessions, on-the-mound sessions and a rehab assignment, it’s doubtful he would return until after the All-Star…
